This week we had exchanges and I got to work a couple of days with Hermana Hess. It was lots of fun to be with another sister who has about the same time in the mission as I do. We were on the same page and taught lots of new people. It was so energizing!! Also this week is Fiestas Patriasor in other words, Independence day, here in Peru. There was a church activity on Friday to celebrate, the members shared talents of Peruvian dances and songs (sorry, I didn’t take pictures.. but yes the outfits are vividly fun). Then the primary kids did some fantastic monologues of the Peruvian Heroes who proclaimed liberty. It was a moving performance. So many people, in so many different countries have given their lives for the cause of liberty! On Sunday we sang the national anthem, "Somos libres, seámoslo siempre" Or in other words.. We are free, and may we always be! Afterwards Bishop Diaz gave a wonderful talk about liberty. He expressed gratitude for being able to live in a country where he could think, act, and worship as he pleases. He went on to talk about how although we are free to act... many of us are still in bonds; chained to addictions, held back by personally placed preconceptions, or tied to temptations. This slavery is our choice... through Christ we can be free from those chains as well. In the Book of Mormon the prophet Lehi declared that we are "free to choose liberty and eternal life through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil." (2Nephi 2:27). The choice is ours, we are free according to the laws of the land, but we also can be free from all sin and spiritual bondage. In Mosiah 7:33, we learn how we can gain this freedom, it states” turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your TRUST in Him, and Serve him with all diligence of mind.".. then the promise comes, saying "if ye do this, He will, according to his own will and pleasure, DELIVER you out of bondage." If we Trust in the Lord, Repent of our sins, make covenants and keep the commandments...we can be freed from the bondage of sin. I know that is true. Only through the Atonement of Jesus Christ are we able to truly be FREE. I am so grateful for the liberty that we have to worship God. We are free. Don´t allow temptations or preconceptions inhibit your progress, "abide ye in the liberty wherewith ye are made free; entangle not yourselves in sin, but let your hands be clean, until the Lord comes." (D&C 88:86).
Be Wise. Repent Daily. Come Unto Christ!
